This category contains a lot of text explaining some of the various features. For a clean example of a category visit the linked category 'Network Sites'. All of the categories are generated as static html pages. This decreases server load, and also greatly improves search engine rankings. The creation of categories is automated, being based on configurable html templates. Categories can have an individual template which effects them alone, or can also be the default for all their sub categories. You can even use SSI within your templates.

The category search box allows you to offer all the normal search features with the addition of category specific options. The visitor can select to search only sites within this category and it's children.

You can have category based advertising. Each advert having up to 10 optional user definable fields, allow all kinds of adverts from simple to complex.

DirectoryPro categories typically contain 4 different kinds of listings.
Categories - Either sub-categories or linked categories.
Topsites - These are often paid listings that appear above standard listings.
LinkTrading/Affiliate sites - You can reward sites that link back to you by automatically ranking them above standard listings (still below topsite listings). This feature can also be used rank sites that you have affiliated with higher thus increasing commissions.
Standard sites - Usually used for free site listings. Such sites appear lower in categories and search results.
All these listings can have individual appearance settings. In this example the Topsite listings appear with their name in bold.
Category banners, Topsites and Linktrade/Affiliate sites are optional features. You may choose to rank all sites fairly.

Sites can be submitted to each category (for your review) in the same way that sites are submitted to Yahoo or any of the major directories. Sites can also submit modifications to their listings. Here we have placed the submissions link at the bottom of the page alongside the site modification link.

You can choose to have new sites appearing at the top of your sites list for a set duration. You can also mark each site with an age that they have been listed.
 
The template system allows you to completely edit the appearance and display of all areas of your directory using your regular HTML editor. There is no need to use a specific interface. If you are accustomed to using WYSIWYG editors such as DreamWeaver or FrontPage you can use these to edit your directory.

Category feature options include:-

• Category name - As a whole or broken into parts.
• Sub-categories - Including the number of sites they contain.
• Advertising - Suitable for banner or text based adverts.
• Topsites - Ideal for paid listings.
• Ranking options - Enabling you to control which sites rank better.
• User definable fields - Giving you full customization over listing content. In this example we have used 3 of the 10 definable fields for OS compatibility, slogan and a hidden keyword list to improve search results. You may notice that only the Topsites display the slogan field, although we have optped to collect this information for all sites as we may want to upgrade them later.
• Site age - Showing your visitors how long the sites have been listed.
• Site grade - Allowing your visitors to vote on the quality of sites.
• 'Cool' site logo - Giving you the option to mark sites with a graphic or some HTML of your choice. In this example the DirectoryPro listing has been marked as 'cool'.
• Family filter options - Detailed options allowing you to block or hide adult site listings and categories.
• Category Newsletters - Contact members on a category basis. As opt-in or forced mailings. You have the option to automatically reject sites that do not opt-in to your newsletter.
