We ask the question, where is Perl 6 |

With PHP 5 now available as a pre-release, where is Perl 6? We've had Perl 5 for years, and as great as it is, I'm wondering when the long awaited Perl 6 is going to land. So I popped along to perl.com to see the latest news and why it's taking so long. There is no expected release date, but much progress has been made. It's taking so long as Perl 6 isn't just your average update to Perl, it's a new rewrite from scratch. Perl was originally developed by Larry Wall whilst a programmer at Unisys in December 1987. He's still a big part of the team, but now that Perl's role as a language has expanded into the internet, what it really needed was a clean slate with internals designed toward it's new uses. Perl 6 known as "The communities rewrite of Perl" is exactly that. The top Perl developers in the community are working together to build a new all singing and dancing Perl 6. Sounds great, I just hope it'll be ariving sometime soon because I'm very eager to be one of the first to make some Perl 6 scripts available. |
